Porsche Design 1919 Chronotimer Flyback Brown & Leather

Late in 2017 Porsche Design introduced a new watch that was strictly limited to a 500-piece edition and only available for owners of the 911 Turbo S Exclusive Series, a sports car able to reach a top track speed of 330 kilometers per hour.

That watch’s new caliber, designed by Porsche Design’s engineers, is called Werk 01.200 and is a manufacture flyback chronograph movement with hacking seconds for precise setting. Naturally it was quite disappointing for lovers of this minimalist brand that only owners of the car costing from €259,992 were allowed to buy the watch, which contained a number of elements visually connecting it to what is the most powerful 911 Turbo S ever (see Porsche Design Introduces First In-House Chronograph Movement, But This Timepiece Is Exclusively Available For Owners Of Porsche’s New 911 Turbo S Sports Car for full details).

Now this movement is finally coming to Porsche Design’s 1919 line, making the new Porsche Design 1919 Chronotimer Flyback Brown & Leather the first unlimited timepiece to be powered by the Porsche offshoot’s top-of-the-line manufacture movement, whose precision has been certified by the Swiss authority C.O.S.C. A view through the sapphire crystal case back also reveals some of the biggest movement components – including the energy-optimized tungsten rotor for the automatic winding – coated with black PVD and making for an ultra-technical look.

Housed in a 42 mm polished, bead-blasted titanium case, this minimalist watch closely following Porsche Design’s design codes has been made a bit softer by the addition of a beautiful brown dial and a soft calfskin leather strap, which I applaud – it works. And the knurled screw-down crown and pedal-shaped chronograph pushers reveal a touch of automobile inspiration ($7,450, available in stores as of September 2018).
