Remote workers can live anywhere in the world. Why not live somewhere that will pay you?

The state of Vermont will begin paying people $10,000 to pack up their lives and move there.

On Wednesday, Gov. Phil Scott signed the “New Remote Worker Grant Program,” which will pay people up to $10,000 to relocate to Vermont.

In response to the state’s rapidly aging population, Vermont is trying to bring in new blood. The program will fund 100 new remote workers in 2019. The state has allotted an additional 20 workers for every year after that.

Starting Jan. 1, 2019, remote workers can apply for the $10,000 grant to cover moving expenses, co-working space memberships, and other professional needs. The grants will be distributed on a first-come, first-serve basis. Remote workers can receive up to $5,000 each year for two years.

To be eligible for the grant, remote workers must be employed full-time by an out-of-state business and work from a co-working space or home office. They must become full-time Vermont residents in 2019.

For those who wish to dip their toe in Vermont before committing to moving there, Vermont is also hosting a “Stay to Stay” weekend program. Throughout the summer, potential new Vermonters can meet hiring employers and other young professionals while touring the state.
