Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle these DIY Christmas Decorations

THE spooky season has come to pass. Halloween costumes and decorations are now a thing of the past. Now, it’s time to make way for Christmas!

Here is a list of ideas for Christmas decorations one can make, especially if the budget for the holidays was already allocated for gifts and the most awaited Noche Buena. The theme for these decors: Reduce, reuse and recycle. What better way to show love than by showing consideration to Mother Earth as well. It’s also a great way to cut on costs too!

Christmas Ornaments (Toilet paper rolls / Plastic spoons / Bottle caps)

One toilet paper roll can be cut into several small cardboard circles which can be glued together to form Christmas décor. Paint them and attach a string, and these can hang in one’s Christmas tree as one DIY ornament. Plastic spoons, however, are the easiest of them all. Just cut the heads of the plastic spoons. Glue all of them to a paper cut-out formed into a cone. Paint and decorate with little cut-out stars, and it’s all done. As for bottle caps, it’s best to reuse them, as they are made of sturdy material, which is quite difficult for Mother Earth to decompose. Glue these circular caps together and form a small triangle. Glue a string in the back of the caps. Paint and hang these bottle caps to make pretty cute Christmas tree ornaments.

Paper Christmas Tree (Old magazines)

We all have those stacks of magazines that occupy a certain space in the house. Whether those are clothing and make-up catalogues or magazines that feature fashion trends or celebrities, it’s still quite wasteful to throw these glossy pages away. Nevertheless, they can be folded into do-it-yourself Christmas trees. There’s no need to cut! Just fold the pages in a diagonal way, creating folded triangles, and it’s good to go. Just fold all the pages this way, and it will soon resemble a small Christmas tree. Glue the folded pages. Paint and decorate!

Christmas Wreaths / Snowflakes (Plastic drinking straws)

There are a lot of ways one can turn a bunch of straws into Christmas decorations. Not to mention, it’s better to use them this way than throw them away immediately after use. Straws can be turned into Christmas wreaths. Just glue them on a circular cut-out, weaving them in a circular manner, leaving some space in the center. Add some paint and some glitter, and it’s good to go. A bunch of straws can also be turned into some sort of snowflake ornament. Just tie a bunch of straws in the middle with a ziplock. Tighten it until all the ends are poking out. Paint them and tie a string in the middle. Hang it, and you now have a bizarre but pretty looking snowflake! (S)
