Plastic Ban in Colorado

City lawmakers in Denver are reportedly considering enforcing a ban on products such as plastic bags.

Denver City Council President Jolon Clark said the discussion about plastic bags includes a ban on straws and plastic utensils, according to the local news station, CBS 4.

The news station notes that the topic of banning plastic bags came up during a Policy Committee meeting last week.

A Colorado law currently bars local governments from banning the “use and sale” of plastic products. CBS 4 notes that the bill could move forward only if the law were repealed.

Lawmakers must also consider factors such as the ban’s effect on businesses and whether certain groups would be negatively impacted.

The idea comes as many cities and companies around the world make moves to ditch plastic products. Starbucks announced in July that it would stop using single-use plastic straws at all of its stores by 2020.

Cities such as Miami Beach, Fla., and Seattle have also instituted bans on plastic straws over concerns about ocean pollution.
