Holiday foods your pets shouldn’t nibble on this year — or ever

Holiday hazards are lurking around your Christmas tree and dangling from your dinner table. But it’s not the humans you need to worry about, it’s your four-legged friends.

Christmas trees are a prime target for curious cats.

Veterinarian Dr. Kelly Baete suggests avoiding decorations like tinsel or ribbons.

“Sometimes they will try to eat it and that can make them very sick if they were to get into that,” said Baete.

For both cats and dogs, Poinsettias can lead to upset stomachs. If you have these holiday plants in your home, make sure they are not in a location that your pet can reach.

Chocolate has also been known to give dogs upset stomachs, but the raisins in fruitcakes can be even more toxic.

When it comes to seasonal stress, Dr. Baete says the best way to prevent pet panic is to get them moving.

“A tired dog is usually a more quiet and happier dog,” said Baete.

If your pet is really stressed out, check with your vet. They may be able to prescribe a medication or supplement that could help reduce anxiety.
