This dead whale carcass just won’t go away
It’s already been towed out once before, and it was just towed out a second time.
Officials with the Department of Land and Natural resources provided an update on a rotting sperm whale carcass off Oahu’s southern shore.
On Saturday, the DLNR said crews towed out the remains of the whale an additional 2.5 miles.
Initially, the carcass was hauled about 15 miles from shore on Jan. 10.
In the days following that, several sharks were seen feasting on the body of the whale, including one of the world’s largest great white sharks known as “deep blue.”
Sharks weren’t the only things attracted to it: Some not-so-smart swimmers were caught on camera climbing and walking on the carcass.
The DLNR says such actions are illegal and “extremely culturally disrespectful.”
Eventually the carcass drifted its way back to shore, getting close enough to get stuck on a coral reef.
Crews are hopeful the current won’t bring it back to where it was first found at Sand Island.
