Valentine’s Day trends in the Wiregrass

Valentine’s Day is notorious for being the busiest time of year for florists and jewelers.

Today we take a look at what local businesses are doing to get ready for the big day this year.

Valentine’s Day is right around the corner and if you are wanting to be proactive in getting something special for your sweetheart, look no further than “Sweet &Sassy” in Dothan.

They offer free delivery on all orders $25 or more within the city limits.

Donna Dickerson, owner of “Sweet & Sassy” told WDHN news, “Valentine’s Day is the single busiest day out of the whole year and because we deal in fresh product there’s not a lot of pre-preparation you can do. You just get your planning, make sure you got all of your supplies and then at the last minute, the cookies are baked.”

But cookie baskets and cupcakes are not all they offer. If you are looking for an affordable gift for your loved one, they offer plenty of options such as chocolate covered strawberries for only $15 a dozen. Dickerson says the  trends she’s seeing gain in popularity this season are bath bombs, which they also have in stock.

And, if you on going the more traditional route and purchase flowers for your sweetheart, expect to spend roughly $65 to $75 a dozen on roses.

Sheila Taylor, manager of House of Flowers in Dothan says last year they ordered 1,500 red roses, which is their biggest seller  but still ran out. Luckily, their wholesaler stepped in and saved the day.

Taylor stated, “Last year we did. We sold out and of course we have a good wholesaler. They keep us going so it’s good to have them for backup when we need it.”

Taylor added that every year they hire extra delivery drivers and don’t be surprised if you see a police officer coming to your front door with a bouquet.

Taylor told WDHN news, “We actually have police officers coming to help deliver. they know the streets so they’ll be really handy.”

Valentine’ s Day is a billion dollar industry in the U.S. According to the website Fundico.com., the average amount spent on a person is roughly $150 with jewerly being the most popular Valentine’s Day gift; followed by flowers, clothing, candy and gift cards.

Taylor says. “It’s chaos, but everyone you know gets it done. It’s really busy, busy, busy, but we enjoy it.”
