Letter: Who will step up to stop the plastic waste?
Finally, there is a long overdue sense of urgency that something must be done about plastic bags. They have choked our planet, and killed our wildlife/marine life for years. Plastic never, ever, goes away.
Here in Cumberland County, we have a very serious litter, dumping and plastic bag issue. I would consider it urgent. There are the “ordinary,” usually yellow retail bags we see strewn all over the place. However, our otherwise beautiful county also has been trashed with little green, and transparent gray plastic bags. Deliberately thrown into our environment, the advertisements they hold are not requested, and evidently unwanted. Even vacant homes receive them. Sadly, many people don’t have the motivation to dispose of them properly.
They often end up in the street, or in a drain grate to get into the water system.
There must be a sense of urgency on behalf of our elected officials to stop this deliberate litter. This is something county or local government could control. I have wondered why someone in a position to stop it hasn’t contacted the distributors, or created an ordinance banning this practice. Those circulars can be distributed like any other free paper in our area.
This equals thousands of plastic bags continuously and purposely thrown into our environment. The question is: who in that “elected official” roster is going to step up and face this issue with urgency?
