Container house for lava evacuees remains in Honolulu

HILO, Hawaii (AP) – A company in China that offered to help those displaced by the recent eruption of Kilauea volcano has sent its first prefabricated container home to the state. But the home remains in storage in Honolulu because it does not meet local regulations.

The Hawaii Tribune Herald reported Friday that Hawaii County Managing Director Wil Okabe says the housing unit, made from a shipping container, received minor damage during the trip and doesn’t meet county code.

Okabe says officials are working with the company, Guangdong Huanbao Ecological Environmental, on ways to ensure the remaining units can be retrofitted to meet requirements before being delivered. The company has committed to sending 35 prefabricated container homes.

Units were also being offered to Kauai after it suffered from flooding earlier this year.
