Madonna and Kim Kardashian West Talked About Beauty Together and I Can’t Breathe
Have you ever found yourself lying in bed at night — after cleansing, masking, and moisturizing, of course — wondering what it would be like to sit in the same room as both Calabasas-based American sweetheart Kimberly Noel Kardashian West and the most iconic entertainer of all time, Madonna Louise Ciccone? I have. I’ve dreamt about it every night since I started this post, which is exactly two nights.
Well, reader, dreams come true. At an event at YouTube Spaces LA in Los Angeles, to celebrate MDNA Skin’s newest product, The Reinvention Cream, myself and a gaggle of influencers, editors, and beauty gurus were audience to an intimate (spiritual, and mesmerizing) conversation between Kim K and Madonna, during which we learned everything about the newest addition to the material girls’ skin-care line.
“I’m obsessed with moisturizing,” said Kardashian West.
“Me too!” said Madonna, citing hydration as one of the reasons she started MDNA Skin.
The main ingredient across all of MDNA Skin’s products, including the Reinvention Cream, is M.T.PARCA Thermal Water, or as Madonna calls it, “golden waters of beauty.” Found in the thermal springs of Montecatini, Italy, these are thermal waters that “you can’t find anywhere in the world.” “Roman emperors bathed there,” the singer explained, “it’s a spot that has attracted everyone from movie stars, to scientists, to political leaders…” If it’s good enough for Roman Emperors, and Madonna, then it’s good enough for me.
“It treats everything from eczema, psoriasis, rosacea, acne to arthritis,” Madonna added. [Editor’s note: Madonna may be a legend and a living queen, but if you have one of these skin conditions, please see a doctor before you buy a plane ticket to Italy.]
“I want to drink these waters!” said Kim.
The Reinvention Cream is the brand’s first all-in-one skin-care solution. Like Madonna herself, the cream is a multi-threat. It can act as a lotion, serum, cream, and a mask, so “If you’re big on moisture, and you don’t want to have five, six, eight products, you just take this cream and put it everywhere: knees, elbows, face, breasts, butt, everything — you can use it anywhere,” Madonna said.
The product’s aim is to streamline your beauty routine while revitalizing your skin’s appearance. For someone who usually gets up 10 minutes before I need to run out the door, and who likes to contain my nighttime beauty routine to commercial breaks, a “streamlined beauty routine” is music to my ears.
“But why the name?” you are surely wondering. No, the cream is not named after Madonna’s 2004 Re-Invention World Tour, which made 56 stops and grossed $125 million. But, both the Re-Invention Tour and the Reinvention Cream have a more indefinite, symbolic, meaning. As Madonna herself explained: “I’m synonymous with the word reinvention, which is why I called the cream reinvention.”
Beyond Madonna’s renown for introducing entirely new visual ‘eras’ for each album cycle, the term “Reinvention” also speaks to the star ingredient of MDNA Skin’s quadruple-threat Reinvention Cream. “The main ingredient of this cream is from something called the resurrection plant,” said Madonna. Found in Sub Saharan Africa, the plant is known for its ability to survive almost complete dehydration, curling up into a tight ball, and coming to life with only a few drops of water. “We’ve been able to extract the stem cells of this plant and put them in this all-in-one cream.”
The two pop culture icons also chatted about everything from their beauty inspiration, and obsession with hydration, to looks they would never try again (Madonna responded, “none”). When asked about any other upcoming products they are excited about, Kardashian West mentioned her upcoming concealer kit (something she first talked to Allure about back in June 2017) and collaboration with the winner of Glam Masters as two launches we should look out for. And on how they first met, Kim recounted that “[Madonna], at a time in her life, moved in with her manager who happened to be our neighbor growing up. So, Kourtney and I would walk their dog after school.”
Imagine that. Kim. A dog walker.
The Reinvention Cream is available now for pre-order and launches April 6, 2018. A portion of the proceeds will go to Raising Malawi, helping fund healthcare and primary education.
