This Viral Tweet Is Proof That You Need to Take a Break In-Between Acrylics
There’s no question that the things we do in the name of beauty can get a little crazy. Tales of makeup and skincare mishaps are all over the Internet. The latest in world of scare-us-straight stories is one of beauty blogger Amelia Perrin, whose 2016 tweet that is now going viral shows her destroyed nails from chronic acrylic nail wear.
According to Cosmopolitan UK, who first shared the story, Perrin’s nails were most likely ruined from improper removal of her falsies. A much cheaper adhesive, not meant for nails, can cause the false tips to stick a little too well to the nail bed. When it’s time to remove them, it can literally rip your natural nails off. Although it’s unclear if this was the case with Perrin, the damage appeared to be in line with it. You can see from the pics that her nails are completely peeled off, bloody, and raw. She talks about how painful it was to even shampoo her hair with her fingers in such a fragile state. Ouch!
Aside from not taking the falsie off correctly, Perrin’s nails could have already been weakened from not taking a break from her acrylic wear. Ultimately, going too long without allowing your nails to breathe weakens and leaves them super fragile and easily broken. As with any beauty habit, too much of anything is never good. So while actually wearing acrylics isn’t where Perrin went wrong — although there are healthier alternatives — not taking time off in between applications only increased the potential for breakage.
Perrin was able to reverse much of the damage fairly quickly by putting herself on a biotin regimen. Five days after her initial post, her nails showed huge improvement. And hopefully it’s a lesson learned for both her and us.
