Is there a link between smart cities and a quality lifestyle?

By  Scott Brown

Smart technologies are making their presence felt all over the world. As people spend more and more time outside, digital signage is increasingly coming into play to provide information. Living in a connected world has its advantages, and free Wi-Fi is just one of these.

Smart cities that use technologies to find solutions to questions simplify things for residents and improve quality of lifestyle. It could be the use of sensors to capture peak hour traffic at given destinations and regulate vehicle access or the use of DOOH kiosks to provide information at a large convention. There is a lot that can be done with this technology. Throw in VODXS into the mix and you have faucets in public washrooms with LED screens that provide information and serve ads. The experience is highly personalized and can be made interactive.

A well-thought out system that leverages the Internet-of-Things to send out information and collect data is at the center of the smart city concept. The data gathered informs on opportunities and bottlenecks.

When implemented, an idea appears elementary but the trick lies in coming up with creative uses of technology to run functional smart cities. Like maybe, approximate waiting times for buses, trains, and cabs based on real-time information from the vehicles. Sensors can monitor pollution levels along routes and the government can take steps to alleviate pollution based on the information.

Updated weather information on DOOH billboards is another idea. Information to help tourists can bring in revenue for the city – information about historical landmarks and prominently displayed route information.
